Is there more to life than this? This is all that surrounds us, in the media, in education, even in the home.University is just a means to get more money, be more successful (generally speaking). Good looks are purely to attract. And Cars, well, the guys reading this will have to enlighten me. Why is this all people pursue?

People worship the god of More Stuff because they want luxuries, which is not by itself a bad thing. Some people already have all the luxury they can possibly enjoy but keep working because people are stupid. Work also gives people a sense of accomplishment, and some are effectively addicts.
Oh, and don't ask guys about cars. We'll just stare at you blankly and wonder about it. Ask the ghost of Sigmund Freud.

I don't think you can put the cars on the guys alone -
girls like nice cars -
its all about the girls - trust me - if hot girls thought boys looked "cute" driving Volvos - then Porshe would go out of bussiness.

And judging from antiquity (e.g., Tutankhamen's tomb) the obsession with having the most glorious possessions has been around a long time.
If it means anything, there have been those who have used their wealth for greater things than mere fame. I am thinking of George Washington, Eleanor Roosevelt, or even Paul Mellon. If nothing else, they are certainly contrasts to such as Paris Hilton.

I think that people's materialism (especially in the western world, but also other places) is because material success have become the highest values in our lives - as opposed to intellectual or spiritual ideas and beliefs. Most people claim to be religious, but become obsessed with the material, which correct me if I'm wrong, is the exact opposite of what their religions preach.
While it's much easier to focus on the shaved head of the idolized Brittney Spears, it's harder for one to attain success by reaching an understanding about what life is really about. The focus on material possessions and ideas is a welcome distraction for those struggling with those things that they can't see or express. To me, this is what causes most problems, the idea that money, fame, and fortune = power, as opposed to knowledge equalling power. People are caught up trying to obtain superficial things and lose sight of what is real (i.e. who they really are, and what their purpose in life actually is. They begin to think that material things are more important than anything else when material success and infatuation becomes their ultimate goal in life. I don't even know that it is a goal, it is more of an obsession I think.
Additionally, when people strive for physical perfection, or seek it, their existance (in my opinion) becomes superficial. No matter how good you look, or how much stuff you have, if you don't realize that there really is more to life than material gain, your life will be shallow. It doesn't matter what Paris Hilton does, or what car you have, or how flawless your body is, if you are empty inside believing that attaining more than you need to get by is actually something to strive for, that just sucks, and in the masses of people, it explains a lot about the horrible things that happen when people with those values become powerful because of it. The people with the most material things gain the most power in the world and they forget that life is more valuable than that. Everything's about profit, meanwhile half the world lives in poverty while the rich get richer. That's crazy.

Everyone does not want these things. But the best way to describe why one would want all this in life in my opinion is...
Girls (uh...guys like them usually)
Cars - It's fun to go fast! The adrenaline rush you get from speeding down an empty road is amazing! Much like a roller coaster actually, except you are in control. And they can look pretty freaking cool too.
Fame- No one wants to die without being remembered for something or by someone. Fame just insures this. People want to be liked and admired (usually).
Fortune - The connection between human kind and money is an old and greedy tale. The most carnal need and want for it goes down to wanting to be secure in life. Having money means you can do stuff in life, without it it is hard to do much of anything.

Girls, cars, fame and fortune are clearly the engines driving our economies today. Advertisers cleverly use sex to sell everything. I would say cars are the ultimate consumer good and consumerism is the backbone of capitalism (and socialism, too). Fame is certainly used to sell magazines and consumer goods. Fortune gets you all of the above.
Is there an alternative to this consumerist attitude? I think people in the 60's and 70's tried to start communes (today called intentional communities) which sought to emphasize other values: economic equality, environmental sustainability, providing basic needs, allowing time for creativity. Sadly, most of these experiments sooner or later failed as those people returned to the economic mainstream.
I think if people were to start thinking of the Earth as a small commune, instead of their own national, religious, personal interests, maybe the planet could still be saved. But the chase after ever more consumer goods just cannot be sustained forever. There are limits to growth. There are some major crises developing: world food shortages will probably result as fish stocks dwindle, food crops are diverted to energy production, over-development and environmental degradation reduces fertile land. Maybe a return to communal thinking might offer a way out of this dilemma. Soon the world will have 9 billion people, maybe it is already too late.
I think "girls" and "fame" are natural desires and can still be achieved without the consumerist mentality now gripping the world.

I think we need to be careful to not talk about "Girls" as a commodity which needs to be acquired like "cars". I think we can reframe this as a "need to be accepted and appreciated in a relationship."
What do others say?

I agree that we're not like cars as in a posession. However this board sounds fun, so i highly doubt it was said in a negative way.

Everyone gives him/herself a reason to live and to strive for.
Some go for cars, many for fame and even more for fortune. At oen point or anotehr every guy is looking for a girl!
But then again, thigns change, aims change, objectives change.
Life is a journey, not a destination.

I think the things that people want and want to do will always be a fad. In Medieval Europe, everyone was a Christain, and it was very chic to persecute pagans. During the French Revolution, everyone hated King Louis XVI, even though not long ago they had hailed him as the "restorer of French liberty." The things that people pursue and practice are controlled by the way they feel, and the way people feel is constantly changing.

umm well if i may add something
MEN go after power in its different forms as in authority, a high ranked official and even ENGINES big cars delivering horrible power its like a dream to be honest its an obsession
when a man looks to a Porsche for example its more like he's thinking oh my what a powerful engine and thats what attracts him in cars the more powerful the better
as for ladies (thats just an opinion nothing more no offense) i think ladies like the men in charge or with power so basically a guy in a porsche driving such a beast in SOME ladies minds is similar to a man in charge which satisfies them both he got the power and for her he is in charge (also some girls would look to the porsche as a valuable item <money> which attracts them to those men
still men may get the car at the beginning for its power but soon it becomes a way of attracting the ladies the point is
why are many ladies attracted to the VALUE point??
